SALVIATI PRIMARY SCHOOL
The project involves the demolition and reconstruction of the building hosting the school cafeteria and the motor activity room of Salviati Primary School, located in Via Bolognese 168, Florence. The intervention is part of the projects funded by the PNRR – Mission 4: Education and Research. In parallel, fire safety upgrades were carried out on the historic buildings of the school complex, which are protected under Legislative Decree 42/2004 – Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape.
To meet the new functional and sanitary requirements of the school management, the project includes the redistribution of some internal functions within the historic building and the demolition and reconstruction of the existing 1960s structure hosting the cafeteria and the motor activity space.
The new building has a two-storey X-Lam structural system.
Special attention was given to solar exposure and to the relationship between the school and the surrounding green areas. The classrooms for frontal teaching were placed on the first floor, while the ground floor spaces were designed for activities that benefit from a stronger connection with the outdoor environment.
As the intervention area is subject to landscape restrictions, the architectural form and materials of the new building were carefully designed to integrate with the existing school complex and with the surrounding landscape context.
The project is based on principles of sustainability and reduced environmental impact. The new building meets NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) standards, achieving very high energy performance. The very low energy demand is largely covered by photovoltaic panels installed on the roof.
The project also complies with CAM (Minimum Environmental Criteria) throughout all phases of construction. Materials with a high recycled content were selected in order to reduce environmental impact throughout the building’s life cycle.
Finally, particular attention was given to comfort and acoustic insulation, ensuring new school spaces that are efficient and comfortable for both students and staff.
